map-lab's Solution for Stalled Developments in Boston
Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 9:47AM
map-lab, inc. proposed a temporary, modular "sampler" of the Downtown Crossing neighborhood restaurants to temporarily occupy the stalled development project where the Filene's Building once stood. The idea would be to bring a single menu item from each of the existing restaurants in the Downtown Crossing neighborhood to provide a place for people to gather in the center of the stalled project.
It becomes a way of creating a positive out of the negative space, thus giving it value. This model can be applied to any of the sites proposed and beyond (i.e. vacant lots throughout Boston) due to the modularity.
The box is powered by PV panels installed where maximum solar exposure exists, as indicated in this rendering. It's surrounded by LED mesh, which sparkles at night. Both are referenced by yellow indicators.

I get the impression that MapLab, like so many others in Boston, believes that this hole in the ground will remain for years to come. I agree. A very interesting design that is both sustainable and supports local businesses who need an innovative marketing project.
I love it because it's functional and sustainable and most of all cause it sparkles. Bring one to Dudley Square, too, please.
